The 106th Anniversary of the Proclamation of the Republic of Latvia
On November 18, 1918, the state of Latvia was officially proclaimed, marking the beginning of its independence.
This declaration, however, led to a challenging period known as the Latvian War of Independence, where the newly-formed nation had to defend itself against the forces of the former German and Russian empires, as well as the Red Army of Soviet Russia.
The struggle for independence persisted and November 11, 1919, which marked one of the most complex periods in Latvia’s history. The battles during this time were crucial for securing the nation’s freedom.
Notably, in 1919, the victory against the Russian Army in Riga solidified Latvia’s genuine independence. Despite being outnumbered and poorly equipped, Latvian fighters prevailed due to their bravery, heroic spirit, support from the Allies, and the inefficiency of the Russian Army.
The Proclamation Day festivities include various events such as people singing the Latvian national anthem together or torchlight processions – a tradition dating back to the 1920s. The biggest procession takes place in the capital Riga. The route starts at the monument of Latvia’s first Prime Minister Karlis Ulmanis and ends at the Freedom Monument.
On November 21 Astana Tower CEO Mrs. Zhanar Yesseneyeva had the pleasure to be invited by H.E. the Ambassador of the Republic of Latvia Ms. Irina Mangule at a concert and reception on the occasion of the 106th anniversary of the Proclamation of the Republic of Latvia.
The concert was performed by talanted Latvian-Ukrainian musicians Katrina Gupalo and Edgar Vilcans.
